The Latino Radio Service (LRS) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is provided by La Casa Cultural Latina using transmitting equipment and antenna and located at Bevier Hall broadcasting on 1660 KHz on the AM band. It began operation on January 3, 2005.
LRS is a low-power educational radio station
serving the Spanish- and Portuguese speaking students,
staff, faculty, and visitors and students of Spanish and Portuguese of the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of
Illinois. LRS operates under Title 47, Chapter 1,
Part 15
of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, a 1990 revision of which
permits an educational institution to broadcast on the AM band to its
campus if no interference is caused to licensed radio transmitters.
This service is supported by the Office of the
Chancellor, La Casa Cultural Latina,
the College of ACES's Information
Technology and Communication Services unit,
University of Illinois Extension, and the
Department of Educational Psychology.
Instrumental in founding the station were Gary Cziko (Department of
Educational Psychology), Giraldo Rosales (former director of La
Casa Cultural Latina and currently Assistant Dean of Students) and Ben
Mueller (Human and Community Development). Also lending their support
to the establish of LRS were Paul Hixson and Ralf Moller (both of
ACES) and Ken Spelke (formerly of ACES, currently of Library and
Information Sciences).
The views expressed in the programs broadcast on LRS do not necessarily reflect
those of any unit of the University of Illinois or La Casa Cultural Latina.

In January 2005, the Latino Radio Service was featured in articles published by Inside Illinois, the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette, and the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center. In February 2005, articles about LRS appeared in the Daily Illini and the Buzz. LRS was also featured in WILL-AM's "Sidetrack" program of 5 February 2005 (RealAudio | MP3 Download, starting at minute 36).
LRS is currently a fully-automated radio station with all scheduled programming obtained on demand from the Internet. This is a new way to run a radio station that has both advantages and challenges.
Because of its dependence on the Internet and audio servers not under our control, the programs broadcast on LRS may occasionally differ from those listed in the Broadcast Schedule. This is because if a scheduled program is not available via the Internet, LRS will broadcast another program or recorded music instead. Here you can check the current status of the station.
