Incomplete references are preceded by a "greater than" sign (>).
The goal of the STB is to provide a source of literature relevant to selection theory, primarily as it applies to cognitive science, although selected references in biology, education, engineering, immunology, and pharmacology are included as well.
The STB presently consists of approximately 1100 references from numerous sources, and includes the work of both advocates and critics of selection theory. These references include (a) all relevant references from Donald T. Campbell's 1974 essay in which the term "evolutionary epistemology" was introduced; (b) all references listed in the "Evolutionary Epistemology Bibliography" of Campbell, Heyes, and Callebaut (1987), which made use of the published and unpublished bibliographies of many individuals, especially Franz M. Wuketits and Gerard Vollmer; (c) many of the references from Michael Bradie's 1986 assessment of evolutionary epistemology; (d) a substantial number of references (most in German) listed by Eve-Marie Engels (1989); and (e) a considerable number of additions provided by the compilers of this bibliography.
Due primarily to the productivity of selection theory (including evolutionary epistemology) scholars on the European continent, many references are not in English. In these cases, only the titles have been left in the original language. Foreign equivalents of terms such as "editor" and "volume" as well as place names are given in English.
Omissions and inaccuracies seem inevitable in any large bibliography. We therefore urge observant readers (especially listed authors) to send relevant omitted references, corrections, and completions to the first author at the University of Illinois, Educational Psychology, 1310 South Sixth St--Room 210, Champaign, IL 61801, USA. Particularly appreciated would be publication information for works listed here as unpublished, in preparation, or in press. Correspondence can also be sent to Gary Cziko at g-cziko@uiuc.edu.
